How to Wash Your Thinx Period Underwear
“How do you wash them?”
Whenever I share that I’m a fan of Thinx period underwear (and a Thinx Leader), this is one of the top questions I’m asked (besides “do they work” the answer to which is HECK YES).
For the uninitiated Thinx makes underwear for people with periods. They can be worn as backup to a tampon, or if you’re like me, you can use them to completely replace most period care products in your routine. I’ve been using Thinx for over a year now, and have only purchased one small box of pads for occasional use ever since. Wild, right? Understandably, when I share that I use Thinx it inspires a great deal of curiosity. After all, period products have remained much the same for the past several decades and while I’m thankful we no longer need to rely on period belts (what a nightmare), I also wasn’t satisfied accepting the status quo of pads and tampons. Reusable period cups are great for those who can use them – they’re not for me and not right for my body.
Enter Thinx. They’re comfortable, reusable, super absorbent, and make having your period just a little more bearable. I have six pairs now, and I could use a couple more, but those six are about enough to get me through most of my period. And when it comes time to wash them? Well, I’m sharing the steps I take below – caring for your Thinx is super easy, but takes a little extra attention:
How to Wash Thinx Period Underwear:
After using your Thinx, be sure to rinse them as soon as possible in cold water.
Tip: If I’m out and about and there’s a chance I’ll need to change pairs, I keep an extra pair of Thinx in a waterproof pouch made for storing a wet bikini. I’ll stick the used pair in the pouch and rinse them when I’m home.
Hang the rinsed pair somewhere safe, like the shower (I hang mine on the tub faucet). you can wash them right away, or wait and wash all your Thinx together (I usually wait unless I need a clean pair ASAP).
When you’re ready to wash your Thinx, toss them in the washing machine with other dark-colored laundry (yes, you can wash your Thinx with your other laundry), and wash in cold water with your preferred detergent. If you’re worried about wear and tear, you can put your Thinx in a wash bag, like these.
When the wash is done, hang your Thinx to dry. That’s it!
I know it seems like it should be more complicated, doesn’t it? I’ve found that wash bags like the ones linked above can extend the life of delicate fabrics, like activewear and Thinx. I honestly use those bags for everything!
